SPANISH COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Course: Spanish I
Credit: 1.0 credit
Grade Placement: 9th - 12th
Course Description: concentrated study in the skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and comprehension. An introduction of cultural understanding will be incorporated. Upon mastery of Spanish I skills, the student will receive credit and have a foundation for further study.

Course: Spanish II
Credit: 1.0 credit
Grade Placement: 9th - 12th
Course Description: Upon mastery of Spanish I skills, the components of reading, writing, speaking, listening, comprehension and cultural understanding will be extended. Upon mastery of Spanish II skills, the student will receive credit and have a foundation for further study.
Course: Spanish III
Credit: 1.0 credit
Grade Placement: 9th – 12th
Course Description: Upon mastery of Spanish II skills a continuation of the skills developed in Spanish I and II with the incorporation of literature and a more in-depth study of the history of Spanish speaking countries (will be emphasized). Upon mastery of Spanish III skills, the student will receive credit and have a foundation for further study.

Course: Spanish IV / AP Spanish Language and Culture
Credit: 1.0 credit
Grade Placement: 9th - 12th
Course Description: is designed for students showing advanced aptitude toward learning a second language, and who have an interest in developing a stronger proficiency in the communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. The history and diverse culture of Spanish-speaking countries will also be studied. Opportunity is given for college credit by taking the College Board AP exam. Seven extra points will be calculated into the student’s overall GPA each semester for this class.

Course: Spanish V / AP Spanish Literature and Culture
Credit: 1.0 credit
Grade Placement: 9th - 12th
Course Description: The course is intended to be the equivalent of a third-year college Introduction to Spanish Literature course, covering selected works from the literatures of Spain and Spanish America. Because students read and analyze literature orally and in writing in Spanish for the purpose, the language proficiency reached by the end of the AP course is generally equivalent to that of college students who have completed a fifth or sixth semester of Spanish in composition, conversation and grammar as well. Seven extra points will be calculated into the student’s overall GPA each semester for this class.
