The undiscovered particles of dark matter are commonly known by the descriptive

acronym WIMP. In this WebQuest you will find out what WIMP means. Then, you will

write a news bulletin that includes the information from your research.

Process

Use the resources listed in the Resources section to begin your research. The Web sites

listed are good starting points, but further Internet research will be necessary.

Record your answers to the following questions.

  1. What is dark matter?
  2. What clues do scientists have that it exists?
  3. What does WIMP mean?
  4. Is WIMP an accurate description of the dark matter particles?

Organize your information in a summary table to help you keep track of it.

News Bulletin

Once you have completed your research, write a news bulletin that summarizes the

information that you gathered. Imagine that dark matter has just been discovered. After

making that announcement in the news bulletin, give background information to explain

to the public what dark matter is and what led scientists to investigate it.
