they're going to read discuss how to balance chemical equations and the need to balance them the law conservation of mass is what makes us half the balanced so why do we balance first of all the laws state matter is not created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction when chemicals are mixed reaction takes place then at the end you still have the same atom that you started with their just rearrange like Legos being pulled apart put together to make an airplane pulled apart to make a fire engine the same thing going on so that means if we can match them the mass before reaction of all the reactants that we're going to put in there will equal the mass after reaction of all the products assuming you can actually measure the gas is created it's hard to capture gas like burning a piece of wood you have to capture every single bit of smoke all the gas molecules so doesn't work out real neatly in the real world vacuum jar they burn some candles and it did work perfectly so with the right equipment we could measure that and does every atom that's there at the beginning must be there at the end and we're riding a chemical equation we have to count for that which is the balancing and here is up example just in pictures so the reaction of nickel chloride we have nickel chloride here and you've got a copy there you got nickel with two Adam just what the two stands for and sodium hydroxide here sodium hydroxide is a sodium atom bonded to an oxygen and hydrogen atom and it creates nickel hydroxide and sodium chloride that's the base reaction when you write it out the problem with that reaction is you can see from the pictures we have two chlorine atoms on this side in the reactants and yet we only have one chlorine atom here so we'll have to make some changes and here we have one hydroxide but over here we have to set means unbalanced and so what we need to do the balance that this we need to have another NaOH no sodium hydroxide only add that in the picture we've got to put this coefficient to we put this coefficient and that number means that there to sodium hydroxide there's two of these but I'm drawing with a mouse and so it's putting all those weird spikes I Can't Tell You Why sorry about that song The Other Side the real chlorine was also out of balance and so we can balance it by adding another sodium chloride when we do that we have to put the coefficient of 2 cuz that means there's two sodium fun pictures that's why we're now we go through and look at each item we have a nickel in a nickel to chlorines two chlorines two sodium's two sodium's II hydroxide hydroxide what's a balanced equation looks when you're actually get a problem in front of you you're riding out of chemical equation so every one of these formulas is correct we learned that the previous units are not going to go back to there the left of the arrow are reactants the rider called the products that arrow is the dividing line and so we take that dividing line and we just go ahead and draw it in it makes it a little easier to do this it's a first step you going to list each other the number of atoms here in the reactants so we have in a sodium and if there's no subscript it's one that's why I rushed where I got the one here if there been a coefficient in this blank we would have multiplied buy subscripts sisters none is just one sodium atom and we use a subscript for chlorine if to that's where I got the two for chlorine so far she's listed it here and I'm going to go over to the other side and do the same thing on the other side and now we can compare the two we have one sodium 2 chlorine 1 sodium and one chlorine that's not balanced so because of that we're going to have to do some balancing we going to do that by putting coefficients and they go where I put blanks in this problem so we start with what's not balance is chlorine we only had one we needed to use we put a to hear that I'm a tattoo text means 2 * X means the same thing here and math it's kind of a coefficient and a variable that's a multiplication problem so here it's a multiplying it's two times of subsequent here but that means each of those has a one 2 * 1 for sodium so it's not like it's going to be it's going to be two of each so now we have two sodium to chlorine cuz remember the picture from before it's too in ACLs so now we better Car Sales did that fix the doing that one thing balance it we look back on the left we say no sodium's only one here on the left and that line right there the only one everything else and it's two in the products soda fix that we have to ask ourselves what times 1 equals 2 and that turns out being of course to do that it's no longer one it's two sodium atoms so now we can pair two sodium atoms is equal to sodium atoms two chlorine atoms is still equal to chlorine atoms so now they're the same numbers once all the elements in the same it's called a balanced equation and that's example thereof how to do balancing equations between this and the other video hopefully that will help if not you can Google and you can find Khan Academy videos and things like that that might explain it a little more if
