November 7th 1867 in Warsaw Poland and died on July 4th 1834 in Geneva Switzerland Mary Curie was an Innovative scientist who with her husband Pierre performed pioneering research but vastly expanded the world's knowledge of radioactivity she discovered the elements radium and polonium won Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry and greatly Advanced scientific and medical terminology through her of the great polio demyx of the 1940s and 50s he also established the Salk Institute for biological studies as research on the causes and treatments for a range of diseases such as cancer AIDS Alzheimer's and by the 1950s polio outbreak in America had reached epidemic levels in 1954 Dr Jonas began testing a new polio vaccine almost half a million children were inoculated with his vaccine children in the control group received injections without the vaccine in them this was the largest medical test of its kind ever done in all more than a million and a half children were involved in this huge scientific test children and young people were the most frequent victims of polio this crippling disease struck without warning in the two years before a vaccine was widely available the average number of polio cases in the US was more than 45,000 per year this is the enemy the poliovirus it can affect the central nervous system infecting cells that control muscle function the result pain paralysis and even death dr. Salk vaccine was composed of polio virus that have been killed with formaldehyde a person inoculated with the vaccine would produce antibodies that would attack a live virus that entered their body in 1955 after a year of testing the results were presented at the University of Michigan doctor stock was as concerned as other parents since he also had a growing family Kali dr.
